A Walk in Great Meadows

One of my favorite spots in the world is the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.  With walking trails through the woods, the Concord River, trails into the village of Concord Center, and lookout towers, this natural treasure is a serene escape from the chaos.  You can actually walk from the refuge all the way into Cambridge.  The dike sometimes feels like walking down a narrow dock with water all around, during flood conditions, it is submerged.  Walk from the driveway, down the bike path (railroad bed) to the right and it will follow the entire "pool" (which is more like a lake), parallel to the river and then down the dike to the parking lot.  Walk the railroad bed in the heat of the summer and the dike if you want more sun.  Enter from Monsen Road, off of Bedford Street, about 1 mile from the center.  A piece of New Hampshire, right here in Concord.
